ZUM presents, for your viewing pleasure, Mawaru Penguindrum Episode 5! In which a Penguinhat is made fun of, curry stew is eaten, and a Nadine lays the verbal hurt on an apple. Trucks are chased, and money changes hands. What will Ikuhara spew from his mind next? As always we welcome any and all comments on our blog. The staff here at ZUM reads the comments quite diligently and does indeed take feedback to heart, and we often do reply to comments.

TL notes

A mask for laughter — 04:01

lit. “Mask of laughter” (). this line is rather visual in nature, so here we tried to convey a more sensible interpretation, “mask for [inciting] laughter.”

Ringo’s curry — 07:09

Again, like in episode 3, curry is a pun on Oginome’s crush on Tabuki (彼; kare = boyfriend).

Destiny Diary — 13:37

Nothing in this line explicitly suggests that the destiny diary (運命日記) is a proper noun, but since destiny diaries are not exactly common nouns either, and this one seems to be an essential part of the story, we’ve decided to accord it that status.
If our hunch is proven wrong, we’ll just revert it for the Bluray v2s :P

Medical jargon — 09:59

Atto is an SI prefix for 10^-18. It seems an unusually small number for epinephrine, but we do not profess to any professional medical knowledge.

“We come from the world where your fates reside.” — 11:59

Penguinhat (henceforth referred to as Boushi-sama) literally says “We come from the place where your fates exist”. this sounds really awkward in English, but unfortunately there really is no way to make it more natural without knowing more about this so-called place where the fates exist. Here, we’ve gone ahead with a little Ikuhara-preempting and presumed this is some kind of world (connected to the current world, as suggested by the kid with the apple). Feel free to discuss this with us in #ZUM.

“Would one still be a man at all” — 21:40

Kanba is speaking in very Elizabethan aristocratic fashion here, and this line is phrased intentionally to evoke that feel. Phrased in modern style it would be along the lines of “Would one still be human?”

Ringo (リンゴ) means apple; an obvious reference from episode 1 and the OP.

2. Today I drew a poster on how to commute to school safely. In art class at school, the art teacher told us to look at the scene we wanted to draw for a long time in our heads before drawing. So I went [pieced together from fragmented JP] to look for safe scenes, like Tabuki-kun closing a traffic light …

4. Today I had delicious fish pancakes. They were huge, and filled with red bean paste. Mom used this brand of bean paste called Black Tea Bean Paste (it actually looks green). I had a bit of it, but I didn’t like it much. It did make me feel more like an adult though.
